The purpose of a commencement ceremony is to affirm each student's educational accomplishments. The most effective commencement speeches celebrate their current achievements in the context of their anticipated future goals and experiences.

Commencement Speakers typically receive an Honorary Doctorate from the College and should meet the criteria for an Honorary Doctorate.

Speakers, in turn, are attracted by a prestigious invitation, or perhaps by the presence of a child or grandchild in the graduating class—and, at times, by the offer of a substantial honorarium. Some institutions, though a minority, pay their speakers what can be hefty sums.

Gifted commencement speakers manage to strike a balance between gravity and levity. They may poke fun at themselves, but they do not poke fun at others. Addresses that are too solemn or too jocular run the risk of annoying the audience and undermining the message. Don't over-quote.

For some campuses there is a university-wide committee which will make a selection for the president to approve. Some campuses survey students to get recommendations for the speaker. On many campuses the president – and maybe a group of advisers – will select the speaker.

Commencement Speaker Qualifications “For graduate commencement ceremonies, speakers are generally graduate faculty members who are accomplished and highly engaged with graduate-level education,” said Angie Hunt, media relations specialist at Iowa State University.

Some institutions, though a minority, pay their speakers what can be hefty sums. One agent who represents a portfolio of prominent entertainers observed that fees for graduation speakers may go as high as $500,000.

Schools typically have professional development budgets that can range anywhere between $2,000 all the way up to $20,000. Some schools pay $15,000-$20,000 for their speakers.

The purpose of the commencement speaker should be to inspire the members of the graduating class, not to amuse or to instruct them, and certainly not to bore them. Of course, in inspiring, he may make use of humor, may instruct, convince, and actuate, but these should be incidental to the main end of inspiration!
