Meaning of economic convergence in English a process in which economies of different countries become more similar to each other: Economic convergence exists when two or more economies tend to reach a similar level of development and wealth.

When countries with lower levels of GDP per capita catch up to countries with higher levels of GDP per capita, the process is called convergence. Convergence can occur even when both high- and low-income countries increase investment in physical and human capital with the objective of growing GDP.

Some examples of convergence theory include Russia and Vietnam, formerly purely communist countries that have eased away from strict communist doctrines as the economies in other countries, such as the United States, have burgeoned.

Economic Convergence Examples First-World Countries: First-world countries of today such as Singapore and South Korea have come a long way from initially being third-world countries. Their technological advancements have seen them rise to become first-world nations.

This theory is based on the observation that underdeveloped economies tend to grow more rapidly than wealthier economies. As a result, the less wealthy economies literally catch up to the more robust economies. The catch-up effect is also referred to as the theory of convergence.

This means that the Solow model concludes that (after controlling for those factors that determine differences in the steady state level of income per capita) poorer countries should grow at higher rates that richer countries.

When countries with lower levels of GDP per capita catch up to countries with higher levels of GDP per capita, the process is called convergence. Convergence can occur even when both high- and low-income countries increase investment in physical and human capital with the objective of growing GDP.

In economic growth literature the term "convergence" can have two meanings. The first kind (sometimes called "sigma-convergence") refers to a reduction in the dispersion of levels of income across economies. "Beta-convergence" on the other hand, occurs when poor economies grow faster than rich ones.
