There are no state regulations stating that individuals are required to have a high school diploma or GED prior to attending nurse aide or CNA classes. However, some schools and nursing facilities offering CNA classes may require a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) to enroll in the program.

To become a CNA in Illinois you are required to complete a basic nursing assistant training program, or BNATP. First, you need to be at least 16 years old with a minimum of 8 years of grade school. Next, you will need to find accredited CNA classes in Illinois.

The Health Care Worker Registry lists individuals with a background check conducted pursuant to the Health Care Worker Background Check Act (225 ILCS 46). It shows training information for certified nursing assistants (CNA) and other health care workers.

These are the convictions that make you ineligible to work as a nurse: Aggravated stalking. Armed violence. Arson.

The Illinois Human Rights Act prohibits employers from using job applicants' criminal records in making hiring decisions. Under this act: An employer can't ask about a job applicant's arrest record or use the fact that an applicant has been arrested to disqualify them from a job.

An Illinois RN or LPN with an inactive license cannot work as an Illinois CNA until the registry shows that the individual has met the training requirements. Nursing students who have not completed all their training to be an LPN or RN can apply to be an Illinois CNA while continuing to go to school.

Offenses that result in automatic denial of waiver: Must [no-lexicon]appeal[/no-lexicon] Abuse or neglect-Long Term Care (LTC) resident. Aggravated battery. Aggravated robbery. Aggravated vehicular hijacking. Armed robbery. Child ography. Criminal abuse of elderly or persons with a disability. Criminal sexual abuse.

To maintain your active CNA status, however, you must maintain active work status in Illinois. This would entail working in Illinois for at least one 8-hour shift within a 24 month period, performing nursing or nursing-related duties for pay under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
