GLOSSARY. Satisfactory academic progress is the process a school uses to determine if a student is meeting all of his or her educational requirements and is on target to graduate on time with a degree or certificate. This process may vary across schools.

If you fail to meet SAP standards, you will be placed on financial aid restriction. Students on financial aid restriction are not eligible to receive Federal, state, or institutional financial aid.

You have to maintain a certain cumulative GPA to get federal financial aid. Undergraduate students (including teaching credential students) must maintain a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.00. Graduate students must maintain a cumulative institutional GPA of 3.00.

Students must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) to continue to be eligible for federal student aid. Satisfactory academic progress requirements generally include maintaining a grade of C or better and passing enough classes to graduate within 150% of the normal timeframe.

If you have been placed on Financial Aid Suspension as a result of your failure to meet SAP, you can regain financial aid eligibility by meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1. Correct the SAP problem(s) and meet the overall SAP Policy requirements. 2. Submit successful SAP Appeal.

If you don't make satisfactory academic progress, the school may give you a financial aid warning. You'll still receive financial aid during the warning period, which typically lasts for one academic term. If you don't catch up by the end of your warning period, your federal financial aid can be suspended.

What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)? UMBC is required to monitor its student's academic progress to ensure that they maintain a minimum standard GPA and make steady progress toward degree completion. Students who do not meet SAP standards may lose their financial aid eligibility.
