No opportunities for student loan forgiveness: If you're eligible to have your student loans forgiven after a certain amount of time based on your career, it doesn't make sense to repay your loans early. You're better off making your required payments until the debt is forgiven.

This typically happens if your federal student loan servicer makes an error, like sending incorrect or late billing statements. There are a few other situations, like waiting for a borrower defense or Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) application to process, that can lead to administrative forbearance.

Nov. 22, 2022: The COVID-19 emergency relief measures were extended. June 7, 2023: Congress enacted a law ending and preventing further extensions of the payment pause. Student loan interest will resume starting on Sept. 1, 2023, and payments will be due starting in October.

If your loans were eligible, we automatically paused your loan payments and set your interest rate to 0% from March 13, 2020, until Sept. 1, 2023. This payment pause is also known as an administrative forbearance. You can no longer get refunds for payments you made during the COVID-19 payment pause.

Under the SAVE Plan, your monthly payment could be as low as $0. For borrowers who still can't make payments, we created a temporary on-ramp period through Sept. 30, 2024, so that the worst consequences of non-payment won't happen right away. Read the Q&A below for more info on the on-ramp period.

Evergreening is an euphemistic expression that means giving a fresh loan to avert default on an existing one. It is borderline unethical, if not outright illegal. Banks have an incentive to hide stressed loans, because once classified as such, they have to provide for losses, which reduces profit.

Important note: As part of the Fresh Start Program, borrowers with eligible defaulted loans are receiving certain relief measures, including tax refunds (and child tax credits) not being withheld. This relief will continue through at least September 2024.

Note: We currently expect that the payment count adjustment will be completed by July 1, 2024. If you want to consolidate your loan(s) in order to get the benefit of the adjustment, we encourage you to submit a loan consolidation application by April 30, 2024.
