As of January 1, 2023, the Ford Foundation will pay a minimum indirect cost rate (IDC) of 25% for eligible project grants.

The foundation is an independent organization, led by a distinguished board of trustees whose 16 members hail from four continents and bring leadership and expertise in a wide range of disciplines. Today we are stewards of a $16 billion endowment, making $500 million in grants around the world every year.

Across eight decades, our mission has sought to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.

How much of the endowment does the foundation spend each year? US tax code specifies that foundations must pay out at least 5% of their assets each year. Ford consistently exceeds that amount, which means that Ford currently spends over half a billion dollars annually to support our mission.

Ford Foundation's mission is to reduce inequality. The Office of Strategy and Learning (OSL) supports Ford programs around the world to develop and refine strategies, make effective grants, and evaluate and learn from both progress and challenges.

We launched our first round of BUILD grants from 2016 to 2021, dispersing $1 billion in grant dollars to nearly 350 grantee partners in over 30 countries spanning all of Ford's programmatic areas. The next round of $1 billion in BUILD grants will be awarded starting in January 2022 through 2026.

The Dignity and Justice Fund supports social justice and equity through targeted grantmaking across a broad range of issue areas including technology and society; gender, racial, and ethnic justice; creativity and free expression; and more.

The Ford Fund is not affiliated with the more famous Ford Foundation, which was established in 1936 with a financial gift from Edsel Ford and is based in New York City. There have been no direct operational ties between Ford Motor Co. and the Ford Foundation since the mid-1970s.
