If you are considered a dependent student for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) purposes, you'll need to provide information about your legal parent(s) on the application.

If the student's parents are unwilling to provide their information, but there are no unusual circumstances that prevent the student from communicating with the parents and obtaining their information, the student will not be able to qualify for most federal student aid.

If your (the student's) parents are married, remarried, or unmarried and living together, you must invite at least one parent as a contributor with the option to invite the other parent as well. If you only invite one parent, that person will be the parent contributor on your FAFSA form.

If a dependent student's parents are unmarried and living together, both parents will be contributors, will need to have separate FSA IDs, and need to provide consent. Dependent students whose parents filed their U.S. income tax return as Married Filing Jointly only require one parent contributor to complete the FAFSA.
