The Credit Union Membership Access Act of 1998, HR 1151, was signed into law by the President on August 7, 1998. This Act authorizes multiple group chartering for Federal credit unions, and makes other important changes in the Federal Credit Union Act.

Passed Senate amended (07/28/1998) Credit Union Membership Access Act - Title I: Credit Union Membership - Amends the Federal Credit Union Act (FCUA) to add multiple common bond credit unions to the current permissible categories of single common bond and community credit unions.

The state's two largest credit unions are Navy Federal Credit Union, with $168 billion, and Pentagon Federal Credit Union, with $35 billion in assets.

Bill Clinton enacted the Credit Union Membership Access Act. This opened the door for credit unions to recruit new members from a much wider criteria than they had before, making credit unions much more competitive with commercial banks.
