Annual Review The Manager must review the employee's performance against his or her agreed performance objectives, targets and measures, as well as performance against the agreed competency levels. The individual's agreed performance objectives and competencies should be reviewed against the set performance ratings.

A performance review is a formal evaluation of an employee's performance, skills, and accomplishments in their job. Often rooted in performance ratings, performance reviews are a common practice in organizations, typically conducted on an annual basis.

A performance appraisal gives individual employees and their manager an opportunity to review performance, work content, loads and volume, to look back on what has been achieved during the past year then agree future objectives.

An appropriate amount of time – at least one hour – should be allotted for the meeting and discussion. The meeting should give both the manager and the employee time to discuss expectations, performance and development opportunities.

What should an employee performance review policy include? The policy should detail the criteria for good performance, the frequency and procedures for reviews, and guidelines for rewards and training. It should also emphasize open communication between managers and employees for ongoing feedback.

The performance appraisal is required and initiated by an employee's direct supervisor. The performance appraisal should reflect the employee's performance for the previous twelve (12) months of work.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require performance evaluations. Performance evaluations are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and employee (or the employee's representative).

The process includes: (1) setting objectives; (2) recommended mid-year review of the objectives; and (3) an Annual Review at the end of the rating period. Supervisors are encouraged to meet and discuss objectives and performance at other times whenever warranted or desired.
