By definition, a godparent is indeed Catholic, but canonically only one godparent is necessary. If there is a second sponsor, they can be baptized in another Christian community (termed, obviously enough, a Christian Witness).

This sponsor must be baptized, have received the Eucharist, and also a confirmed member of the Catholic Church. Sponsors must be at least 16 years of age and be willing and able to help the child grow in the Catholic faith. If two Sponsors are selected, one must be male and one must be female.

- Ideally, one of the Godparents at Baptism should serve as sponsor, to emphasize the connection between baptism and confirmation. - Catholics married outside the Church, or who cohabitate outside of the Sacrament of Marriage, are ineligible to be sponsors. - Non-Catholics and former Catholics are also ineligible.

It is for this reason that non-Catholics are not permitted to be godparents of Catholics but may stand as Christian Witnesses, so long as there is a Catholic godparent. The exception to this is an Eastern Orthodox Christian, who may be a godparent to a Catholic child, so long as the other godparent is Catholic.

Church law requires that a candidate for baptism into the Church's community must have at least one sponsor. This sponsor must be baptized, have received the Eucharist, and also a confirmed member of the Catholic Church.

The godparent must be at least sixteen years of age unless for a just reason the minister admits younger persons or unless a different age is stipulated by the Bishop. The godparent must know the rudiments of the faith. They must intend to help teach the godchild the Catholic Faith.
