An encroachment permit grants permission to the permittee or their agent (a contractor) to perform the within the State's right-of-way, and assignment to another party is prohibited. An encroachment permit is not a property right, such as an easement, nor does it confer a property right.

By: LS Carlson Law August 31st, 2023. Introduction: As a property owner in California, it is useful to understand the concept of encroachment. Encroachment occurs when a neighboring property or structure intrudes upon your land, causing potential boundary disputes and legal complications.

A "B" Permit (LAMC 62.106.b) is issued for extensive public works improvements including the widening of streets and alleys, the changing of existing street grade, construction of bridges, retaining walls, and the installation of sewer, storm drains, street lighting, and traffic signals.

An encroachment permit is necessary if you will be using any part of the road right of way (from property line to property line) for storing materials, detouring traffic or parking equipment in the street over night. Encroachment permits are issued for temporary and long term placements.

Length of encroachment is measured as the total length of the encroachments' projections on the street line. L (length of front lot line) means the length of the front lot line along the particular street.
