When a company ends an employee's job, they typically provide a termination letter, also called a letter of separation, stating the reason for termination and next steps. A termination letter is an official and professional way to document and describe the separation between the employee and employer.

Also referred to as a separation from employment, a termination can be voluntary (the employee's decision) or involuntary (the employer's decision).

Unless you have a contract with your employer for a specified length of service, either you or your employer may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause, for any reason or no reason at all, with the exception of illegal discrimination. This is frequently called "Employment-at-Will."

“Full-time” means an employee who regularly works 30 hours or more each week. “Injured in the line of duty” means an injury which arises out of or in the course of employment. Going to or from work shall not be considered in the line of duty. “State employee” means a full-time employee of an agency.

An employer can say that there is a separation of employment instead of using the words "terminate" or "fire." Although it still means that the employee no longer works for the employer, it does not sound as harsh or carry the negative connotations for the employee.

A termination letter or separation notice usually provides a notification of rights to file for unemployment benefits to the employee and in some cases, basic separation information to the state agency if the employee files an unemployment claim.

The "Separation Notice" must be completed, signed by the employer or authorized agent, dated and delivered to the separated employee in electronic or hard copy format on the last day of work in ance with printed instructions on the Form DOL-800.

A discharge, also known as a firing, occurs when an employer terminates an employee's employment due to the employee's performance or behavior. This could be due to poor job performance, violation of company policies, misconduct, or other reasons that are specific to the employee.
