A lumbar puncture or LP is a test to check the fluid that circulates around the brain and spinal cord. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid or CSF. You might have an LP to see if there are any cancer cells or an infection in the CSF. You can also have chemotherapy into the CSF by lumbar puncture.

Headache is a frequent problem following cervical or lumbar puncture. Several textbooks recommend bed rest to prevent headache. Bed rest, ranging from a few hours up to 24 hours, is frequently used in several countries.

After a lumbar puncture You'll need to stay at the hospital for around 1 to 2 hours to be monitored. You'll need to lie flat on your back and rest. If you're having a lumbar puncture as an outpatient, you should be able to go home after a few hours.

Following the procedure you will be asked to remain in bed and lie flat for two hours. This is to minimise the occurrence of headache following the lumbar puncture. You may then be able to sit up and walk around. Before discharge the doctor will decide if you are ready to go home.

A procedure that involves sticking a needle into your spine may sound scary, but a lumbar puncture, or spinal tap, carries little risk. You won't feel any pain during the procedure. But you may feel some pressure in your lower back.

A lumbar puncture may feel uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. Tell the doctor or specialist if you're in pain.

You may be instructed to limit your activity for 24 hours following the procedure. Your healthcare provider may give you other specific instructions about what you should do after a lumbar puncture.

The dressing from the lumbar puncture can be removed the following day. Avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours after the procedure. You can return to all your usual activities such as work and driving, as soon as you feel well enough after that.
