PICC line removal Your PICC line can be removed when your treatment ends. To remove the line, a doctor or nurse gently pulls on the end of the catheter to remove it from your arm. PICC line removal reduces your risk of complications, such as infection.

Hold the sterile gauze in one hand (ready to put it over the insertion site when the catheter comes out) and with the other hand grasp the hub and main catheter. Gently and steadily pull out the catheter, moving your hand closer to the insertion site as you remove the PICC. Stop pulling if you feel resistance.

A PICC line can easily be removed. A nurse removes the dressing and gently pulls out the line. They then put gentle pressure on the area for a few minutes to prevent bleeding and cover it with a small dressing. You should not have any bleeding or pain when the nurse removes your PICC line.

You will be asked to lie down and hold your breath for a few seconds while the line is being removed to prevent any air entering the site.

GENERAL PICC LINE CARE: No strenuous activity or heavy lifting for first 48 hours after line is placed. Never use scissors to remove tape/dressing from around the line. Always tape line to your arm to prevent it from snag- ging on objects. Cover with plastic when showering so the dressing does not get wet.

Moisture under the dressing can cause infection. W hen you shower, cover the PICC with plastic wrap to keep it dry. If it gets wet, you will need to have someone change the dressing. T he PICC should not keep you from moving your arm, but it is important to avoid activities such as heavy lifting or rapid movement.

PICC line removal is usually accomplished without complication. However, to reduce catheter related blood stream infection and the potential for foreign body embolus, PICCs should be removed by a physician or trained registered nurse.

To place the line, a health care provider will: Clean and numb the skin where the PICC line goes in. Put the PICC line into a vein (usually a vein where the arm bends) using ultrasound to guide where the line goes. Thread the PICC line up to a large vein near heart.
