What to report. Cases or suspect cases of rabies in an animal or human must be reported to MDH immediately 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Physicians and veterinarians may obtain information on rabies, including human exposure, prophylaxis, and bite management by calling 651-201-5414.

Report it through 311 or to your health care provider. This will help the Health Department follow up with the pet owner. Contact your health care provider and ask if you need to be vaccinated.

EXPOSURE: An exposure is defined as any bite, scratch or other situation in which saliva or nervous tissue from a potentially rabid animal enters an open or fresh wound, abrasion or break in the skin, or comes in contact with a mucous membrane by entering the eye, nose or mouth.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis: Immunization of high-risk groups Rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis consists of vaccination with rabies vaccine. In Canada, human diploid cell vaccine or purified chick embryo cell vaccine are given on days 0, 7 and any time between days 21 to 28.

To report abnormal wildlife with no domestic animal or human exposure, contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry ( MNRF ) Rabies Information Line at 1-888-574-6656 . The MNRF performs limited surveillance testing of terrestrial wildlife in certain areas, depending on the time of year.

Burden. About 5,000 animal rabies cases are reported in the US each year, with more than 90% of the cases occurring in wildlife.

Rabies Control. Reporting allows the local public health authority to investigate whether the biting animal may have transmitted rabies to the bite victim. Although rabies is currently not very common in Los Angeles County, rabies is endemic in our local bats and can be transmitted to other mammals and to people.

At the time a potentially rabid animal bites you, there's no way to know whether the animal has transmitted the rabies virus to you. It's common not to find bite marks, too. Your doctor may order many tests to detect the rabies virus, but they may need to be repeated later to confirm whether you're carrying the virus.
