If you find a Gila monster that is posing a threat in a populated area, call your local animal control agency or the Department of Wildlife. Usually, a Gila monster whose wandered into town will move on quickly.

Gila Monsters occur in pockets across the desert southwest. In Utah they are found only in Mojave habitat in the southwest corner of Washington County.

Please do not actively search for Gila Monsters or disturb their habitat. These lizards spend over 95 percent of their time underground, so sightings are very rare. Remember, it is dangerous and illegal to pick up, carry or collect a Gila Monster from the wild.

Gila Monsters are not rare, but they are not commonly seen as they spend the majority of their time underground. They may be out digging, hunting, basking, etc. on the surface for only a few hours of a few days per year; about 98% of the year is spent out of sight.

Gila Monsters occur in pockets across the desert southwest. In Utah they are found only in Mojave habitat in the southwest corner of Washington County. Once you get to know them, gilas are not at all monstrous. They are the largest of all lizards native to the U.S. An average gila might be 14-16 in.

The gila monster (pronounced 'Hee-la'), Heloderma suspectum, is a slow-moving species of venomous lizard found within Utah, specifically in the Southwestern corner of Washington County, near where Utah meets both Arizona and Nevada.

Without a Certificate of Registration (COR) issued by the State of Utah, it is illegal to collect or possess a wild Gila monster. Red Cliffs Desert Reserve has a COR to keep “Herc” and use him for educational purposes. The largest and only venomous lizard in the U.S., Gila monsters can reach up to 2 feet in length.
