Nyc FAQ
-
Blood lead levels of 3.5 mcg/dL or greater for all NYC residents must be reported within 24 hours: For children younger than 18, fax to 347-396-8935. For adults, fax to 347-396-8883. After business hours doctors should call 212-POISONS (212-764-7667).
-
There are approximately 590 000 young children with elevated blood lead levels today, using the CDC's definition of the blood lead reference value (the 97.5th percentile of the child population blood lead distribution) and the recent estimate of the number of children between 1 and 6 years of age (23.6 million19).
-
The amount of lead in blood is referred to as the blood lead level, which is measured in micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (μg/dL). CDC currently uses a blood lead reference value (BLRV) of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter to identify children with blood lead levels that are higher than most children's levels.
-
What do health care providers do to manage and prevent lead poisoning? New York State Public Health Law and Regulations require health care providers to: Obtain a blood lead test for all children at age 1 and again at age 2. Assess all children ages 6 months to 6 years for risk of lead exposure.
-
The lead standards establish a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 50 μg/m3 of lead over an eight-hour time-weighted-average for all employees covered. The standards also set an action level of 30 μg/m3, at which an employer must begin specific compliance activities, including blood lead testing for exposed workers.
-
Action level means employee exposure, without regard to the use of respirators, to an airborne concentration of lead of 30 micrograms per cubic meter of air (30 µg/m3) averaged over an 8-hour period.
-
At high levels of exposure to lead the brain and central nervous system can be severely damaged causing coma, convulsions and even death. Children who survive severe lead poisoning may be left with permanent intellectual disability and behavioural disorders.
-
This number is used to monitor the progress of lead poisoning prevention in the United States. The current CDC reference level is 3.5 micrograms per deciliter of lead in blood for children.
