XIII FAQ
-
Toxic levels of lead exposure are much less common today. But as the Flint water crisis reminds us, lead is still in the environment, and risks from lead paint remain in older homes.
-
There are approximately 590 000 young children with elevated blood lead levels today, using the CDC's definition of the blood lead reference value (the 97.5th percentile of the child population blood lead distribution) and the recent estimate of the number of children between 1 and 6 years of age (23.6 million19).
-
Using the current standard of 5 ug/dL, the percent of children under age 6 years with elevated blood lead levels (EBLLs) has continued to decrease in New Jersey. The percentage of children decreased between State Fiscal Years (SFY) 2018 and 2022 from 2.5 percent to 1.9 percent.
-
NJ's Standards for Lead in Drinking Water If in a monitoring period, the 90th percentile of lead samples collected is greater than 15 parts per billion (ppb), then the water system would incur what is called an “Action Level Exceedance” (ALE).
-
Effective July 22, 2022, it requires that any rental property in New Jersey built before 1978 be inspected for lead. This law requires two different types of inspection based on the percentage of children residing in a municipality who have higher blood lead levels.
-
Lead poisoning is very common. 1 in 40 children ages 1-5 years old have blood lead levels that are considered unsafe (over 5 µg/dL).
-
Nearly a third of the world's children – up to 800 million children – are affected by lead poisoning. Lead affects a child's developing brain, causing decreased intelligence, behavioural disorders and learning problems which can reduce potential earnings in adulthood.
-
Children less than six years old are at a higher risk of lead exposure.
