In 2007 New Hampshire passed the Renewable Energy Act, which established the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). Under New Hampshire's RPS, electricity providers must obtain a certain percentage of electricity from renewable energy sources each year, peaking at 25% in 2025.

By: Amanda Gokee - December 8, 2021 11:46 am Jared Chicoine has been confirmed as commissioner of the state's fledgling Department of Energy following a 4-1 vote during Wednesday's Executive Council meeting. Cinde Warmington, the lone Democrat on the council, was the only vote in opposition.

Run by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission, the Residential Renewable Electrical Generation Rebate Program offers a rebate at the rate of $0.20 per watt up to a $1,000 max or 30% of the total cost. Homeowners are eligible for whichever amount is less.

Electric Generation Approximately 25% is generated by natural gas while 7% is generated by hydropower, 6% is produced by biomass, 3% is wind, 1.6% coal and about 1% from solar.

The NHPUC is composed of three Commissioners appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Executive Council to staggered six year terms. A Chairman is named as the overall agency head. The senior administrator of the Commission is the Executive Director who oversees all administrative operations of the agency.

The New Hampshire Department of Energy's new 10-year energy strategy, as in past years, prioritizes cost-effective energy above all else, and calls for free-market selection of energy resources, regardless of the fuel source.

Last year, 14% of New Hampshire's net electricity generation came from renewable sources. New Hampshire aims to increase this share to 24.8% in 2025—as required by its Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).

The RPS law mandates that 25.2 percent of the state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2025. Each year electric service providers comply with the law by acquiring Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, representing electricity generated from renewable sources.
