Hot Work is usually defined as any open flame, spark or heat producing activity and is typically associated with cutting, welding, grinding and brazing operations. A designated hot work area is a permanent location designed for hot work. These areas do not require a daily permit to perform hot work.

Hot Work is defined as cutting, welding, soldering and brazing operations for construction/demolition /maintenance/repair activities that involve the use of portable gas or arc welding equipment.

When hot work must be performed in a location that is not free of fire hazards, all necessary precautions shall be taken to confine heat, sparks, and slag so that they cannot contact flammable or combustible material.

Take precautions to make sure the area is safe prior to beginning hot work operations, including: Removing combustible materials. Making sure sparks and slag cannot travel to non-protected areas. Ensuring other personnel in the area are aware of the hazards to which they may be exposed.

HOT WORK PERMITS When this is the case and hot work must be performed in a “non-designated” area, a hot work permit will be required. The hot work permit will outline the special precautions which must be taken to ensure everyone's safety during hot work operations.

A permit must be issued before the hot work begins. The proper permit will record that safety requirements have been met and the results of the monitoring for combustibles (percent LEL).

The main hazards from these operations are fire, burns (flame, surface contact or radiation), toxic fumes and eye damage. Hot work on enclosed vessels such as drums and tanks may give rise to ignition of their internal atmosphere.
