The Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency ( PMRA ) is responsible for pesticide regulation in Canada. Created in 1995, this branch of Health Canada consolidates the resources and responsibilities for pest management regulation.

Apply with the MDA by completing and submitting application to add a Category (N: Non-soil Fumigation or O: Soil Fumigation) and pay $5 for a new card. Schedule an exam at the MDA or at a testing location with electronic testing. Take and pass a closed book, multiple choice, 50 question exam.

The use of the active ingredient found in Pyrinex 480EC, chlorpyrifos, has been forbidden in residential areas by Health Canada since 2003.

Training and certification are required in Alberta for anyone applying pesticides, other than commercial agriculturalists (farmers).

The most commonly used insecticides are the organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates (see Figure 1).

There are approximately one million pesticide applicators in the United States certified to use RUPs and an estimate of 930,000 noncertified applicators.
