To join the Coast Guard, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien between 17 and 42 years old. While GEDs are sometimes accepted, high school diplomas are preferred. All recruits take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test to determine placement.

The Coast Guard is the most difficult service to join. There are few openings, and it's very competitive. Average ASVAB scores for enlisted personnel are the highest of all military branches, and the Coast Guard Academy is the only service academy that doesn't accept applicants through political nominations.

The acceptance rate at United States Coast Guard Academy is 15.5%. For every 100 applicants, only 16 are admitted. This means the school is extremely selective.

Recruit basic training is an eight-week course of instruction with new classes starting most weeks. During the first week, you'll get oriented, receive your uniforms, take your entrance fitness test, and meet your company commanders, who will be your instructors, leaders, and coaches.

If you have specialized skills or experience, you may be able to join the Coast Guard as an officer without attending Officer Candidate School or the Coast Guard Academy through our Direct Commission Officer programs.
