Petty Officers (E-4 through E-6) Coast Guard petty officers are the technical workforce of the service. The grades of petty officer third class through first class indicate a growing level of technical ability, responsibility and leadership.

Generally speaking, enlistees do not stay for this long and do not make the Coast Guard a career for themselves, since in most cases, enlistees commit to 8 years of service. Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest spent in the Coast Guard Reserves.

E-5 is the 5th enlisted paygrade in the United States military, with monthly basic pay ranging from $2,872.20 for an entry-level E-5 to $4,076.40 per month for E-5 personnel with over 40 years of experience.

A LTJG is promoted to this rank following four years of service or two years of time in grade. A Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) must have between 9-11 years time in service and 3 years time in grade to be promotable.
