Retirement Benefits The military is one of the few employers in the United States to offer a true pension. This means that after you complete 20 years of service and retire, you receive a monthly annuity (payment) for the rest of your life.

OWCP Death Benefits - If there are no dependent children, the surviving spouse's monthly compensation is 50% of the employees pay. If there are dependent children, the surviving spouse will receive 45% of the employee's pay and each dependent child is entitled to 15%.

Coast Guard members and their families are entitled to pay, access to the base commissary and exchange, family assistance, health care, a generous leave policy, travel opportunities and if the Coast Guard becomes a career, retirement. Active duty members are paid twice a month.

Members who accumulate 20 or more years of active service are eligible for retirement. There are three non-disability retirement plans currently in effect for active duty retirees. These are Final Pay plan, High-36 Month Average plan, and Military Retirement Reform Act of 1986 (more commonly referred to as REDUX) plan.

As a Coast Guard spouse, you are accustomed to juggling a lot of responsibilities. Frequent moves, long deployments, family obligations, and finding a job that suits your schedule, just to name a few. The list is long!

The Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) allows a retiree to ensure, after death, a continuous lifetime annuity for their dependents. The annuity which is based on a percentage of retired pay is called SBP and is paid to an eligible beneficiary. It pays your eligible survivors an inflation-adjusted monthly income.

Those who do have a number of benefits available to them, including retirement pay (which begins at age 60), "Space-A" travel, survivor benefit plan, SGLI, PX/BX/Commissary privileges, transient billeting and legal assistance. Some states offer additional benefits for their retired Guardsmen.

The estimated total pay range for a Retired Military at US Coast Guard is $64K–$105K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average Retired Military base salary at US Coast Guard is $82K per year.
