The natural gas methane is a byproduct of coalification -- the process where plant materials were gradually buried, compressed, and heated, resulting in the various ranks of coal. In Pennsylvania, natural gas is extracted from coal as coalbed methane and as coal mine methane.

The Inflation Reduction Act provides new authorities under Section 136 of the Clean Air Act to reduce methane emissions from the petroleum and natural gas sector through the creation of the Methane Emissions Reduction Program.

Methane may be extracted by drilling wells into the coal seam. The goal is to decrease the water pressure by pumping water from the well. The decrease in pressure allows methane to desorb from the coal and flow as a gas up the well to the surface. Methane is then compressed and piped to market.

EPA issued a final rule in December 2023 to sharply reduce methane emissions and other harmful air pollution from new and existing oil and gas operations. In addition, EPA is working to implement the three-part framework of the Inflation Reduction Act's Methane Emissions Reduction Program.

The final rule builds upon EPA's final standards for federal greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2023 through 2026 and leverages advances in clean car technology to unlock benefits to Americans ranging from improving public health through reducing smog- and soot- ...

Methane is generally considered a cleaner form of energy than traditional coal and oil. Exploration costs for CBM are low, and wells used to extract CBM are cost effective to drill.

The WEC starts at $900 per metric ton for 2024 reported methane emissions, increasing to $1,200 per metric ton for 2025 emissions, and $1,500 per metric ton for emissions years 2026 and later.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a new regulation Thursday morning that would require coal-fired power plants to reduce their greenhouse gas emission by 90% by 2039, moving up a previous requirement by one year.

What is Coalbed Methane Extraction? Coalbeds are a source of unconventional gas. CBM is naturally created during the geologic process of converting plant material to coal (coalification). To extract the methane, CBM operators drill wells into coal seams and pump out ground water (produced water or CBM wastewater).

CMM can be captured by engineered boreholes that augment the mine's ventilation system or it can be emitted into the mine environment and exhausted from the mine shafts along with ventilation air.
