Provide two forms of unexpired State/Federal ID: two Photo IDs (DOD ID, Driver's License or State ID, Passport), or a Photo ID and Social Security Card . Signed DD Form 1172-2 or valid General or Special Power of Attorney. Names on the documents must be the same name.

Important Update: For all uniformed personnel, please be advised that all Active Duty Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard Soldiers are now required to wear their service/duty uniform when receiving a new CAC.

Sponsors will do a background check on all potential cardholders. This will include an FBI fingerprint check along with a National Agency Check (NACI) with Written Inquiries. The NACI process can actually take up to 18 months, but your card may be issued before this as long as your fingerprint check comes back fine.

The CAC, a "smart" card about the size of a credit card, is the standard identification for active duty uniformed Service personnel, Selected Reserve, DoD civilian employees, and eligible contractor personnel.

Sponsored CAC applicants shall not be issued a CAC without the submission a National Agency Check with Inquiry (NACI), or eqivalent investigation, and a favorable FBI fingerprint check. Applicants who have been denied a CAC based on an unfavorable adjudication of the background investigation may submit an appeal.

How do I get a CAC? Your government sponsor will enroll you in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility System and initiate a background check before you are issued a CAC. Once your DEERS registration is complete, you may obtain your CAC at any Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System site.

Since the NACI process can take up to 18 months, you may be issued a CAC before the process is completed and after a favorable fingerprint return. If the NACI process is completed and you are not approved, however, your CAC will be revoked.

If you are a contractor, you must have a sponsor who launches the process of obtaining a CAC. To do so, sponsors must work with Trusted Agents (TAs), who are responsible for enrolling contractors in TASS.
