Tang Soo Do is not the same as Soo Bahk Do®. His Soo Bahk Do® martial art system encompassed the content and attributes of his previous Tang Soo Do martial art system and was expanded and enhanced to include a significant amount of new content.

Unlike taekwondo, soo bahk do focuses on developing the mind as much as the body. One's value is not just reflected in one's ranking in competitions but through one's daily actions and attitude. The benefits are therefore considerable in discipline and respect of one another.

Outside of the Far East, the term "Tang Soo Do" has primarily become synonymous with the Korean martial art promoted by grandmaster Hwang Kee.

In 1957, Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan was first introduced to U.S. servicemen. Classes were held at the U.S. 8th Army's Trent Gym in Yong San, Seoul.

The Koryo army used Tang Soo Do as a combat technique as well as a form of fitness training.

Tang Soo Do is a relatively modern martial art based on the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, which has existed for many centuries. Soo Bahk originated during the Silla Dynasty (618 to 935 A.D.) “Tang Soo Do” translates to mean “Way of the China hand”. “Tang” represents the Tang Dynasty of China.

Cobra Kai perpetuated the Tang Soo Do influence very subtly in Season 1. In episode 7, Johnny barks out a command that sounds like “jun be” which means “get ready” in Korean.

SOO BAHK DO (“Way of the Striking Hand”) is a traditional Korean martial art with historical roots that date back thousands of years. A holistic art, it balances both “hard style” striking hand techniques and powerful kicking with soft “internal” breathing exercises, as well as grappling and self-defense practice.
