A hobby farm (also called a lifestyle block, acreage living, or rural residential) is a smallholding or small farm that is maintained without expectation of being a primary source of income.

Hobby farming is when you start to farm in your free time, dedicating time and effort towards agriculture simply because of your passion, not for the money.

Hobby farmers are different than homesteaders in that they do not have the same drive to be self-reliant. They are different than what we call farmers because they are not trying to make a living. They will often have very good off-farm jobs that fund their farming habit.

Small family farms – GCFI less than $350,000 Low-sales farms – GCFI less than $150,000. Moderate-sales farms – GCFI between $150,000 and $349,999. Mid-size family farms – GCFI between $350,000 and $999,999. Large-scale family farms – GCFI of $1,000,000 or more.

You can start a small farm even if you don't have much money or land of your own to begin with. Although most hobby farms are one to ten acres in size, it's possible to begin urban farming within the city on as little as a quarter acre.

The IRS defines a hobby farm as an activity that is not engaged in for profit. In contrast, commercial agriculture is a trade or business that is primarily intended to generate income. It is important to note that engaging in a hobby farm does not automatically qualify it as a business for tax purposes.

The USDA defines a small farm by income, not acreage: a small farm has less than $350,000 in annual gross cash farm income. Because the value of different crops can range from low to high, income is often more useful than acreage to categorize a small farm.

A smallholding or smallholder is a small farm operating under a small-scale agriculture model.
