Day 100 is a milestone that many stem cell transplant recipients circle boldly on their calendars as the turning point in their recovery. That's when the greatest risk for critical side effects is past and when the stem cells have engrafted and begun making new blood cells.

But in some cases, the cancer comes back (sometimes called relapse or recurrence depending on when it might occur after a transplant). Relapse or recurrence can happen a few months to a few years after transplant. It happens much more rarely 5 or more years after transplant.

You will need to be very careful about interactions with others and avoiding any outside germs until your immune system is functioning again. Physical weakness: People often feel very weak after treatment. You might experience extreme fatigue, nausea or vomiting. Be patient — this should pass in a week or so.

You will feel very tired and run down after your transplant. This will be at its worst during the second and third weeks when your blood cell counts are at their lowest.

Depending on the type of transplant and the risk of complications, you'll need to remain near the hospital for several weeks to months to allow close monitoring. You may also need periodic transfusions of red blood cells and platelets until your bone marrow begins producing enough of those cells on its own.

Later follow-up visits with a nurse practitioner will include the following: a review of your recent medical history and a physical exam. tests to look for any cancer that has come back. a test to identify the side effects of your cancer and its treatment and to help manage any side effects you may be experiencing.

It can take 6 to 12 months, or even longer, for blood counts to get close to normal and your immune system to work well. During this time, your team will still be closely watching you.

During your initial recovery, you will get antibiotics to reduce your risk of infection and other drugs, including medications to prevent and/or manage GVHD. Your health care team will also treat any side effects from the transplant.
