Mediate derives from the Latin medius "middle," and people who mediate are in the middle, between the parties. Other things that are in the middle can be said to mediate as well.

A mediator is an independent and neutral third party who can help negotiate agreements between two disputing parties. Mediators may actively help inform both parties in negotiations, but they may not give legal advice; and final decisions are crafted by the disputing parties.

Some courts allow only “certified mediators” to be placed on court rosters, but most simply require that mediators have completed a 40-hour training class. And in the private sector, there are no requirements at all.

Mediation involves the intervention of a third person, or mediator, into a dispute to assist the parties in negotiating jointly acceptable resolution of issues in conflict. The mediator meets with the parties at a neutral location where the parties can discuss the dispute and explore a variety of solutions.

The suffix -tor is used to indicate a person who performs a certain action—in this case, the action of mediating.

The Latin root of mediated is medius, or "middle," which makes a lot of sense when you imagine a referee standing in the middle of two angry soccer teams.

A mediator is a person who helps negotiate between two feuding parties. When a married couple is considering getting divorced, they sometimes hire a mediator to help them come to an agreement, and possibly even avoid divorce. The word mediator goes back to the Latin word medius, which means middle.

Mediate: In this case, 'medi' is the root meaning 'middle', and '-ate' acts as a suffix meaning 'to act upon'. 'Mediate' therefore means to intervene between parties to bring about an agreement.

A mediator may be defined as an endogenous chemical agent which takes an active part in the development of the inflammatory response. We are then concerned primarily with chemical (mediator) agents which are associated with and responsible for the events occurring during inflammation.

A simple example of a mediator variable: Exercise affects family relationships because it creates endorphins. Exercise is the independent variable, and family relationships are the dependent variable. Endorphins are the mediator.
