The ARRAY statement defines a set of elements that you plan to process as a group. You refer to elements of the array by the array name and subscript. Because you usually want to process more than one element in an array, arrays are often referenced within DO groups.

Assigning values to an element in an array is similar to assigning values to scalar variables. Simply reference an individual element of an array using the array name and the index inside parentheses, then use the assignment operator (=) followed by a value.

Syntax of SAS Arrays Array array-name {number-of-elements} list-of-variables; Note: You can use [ ] or { } or ( ) for defining number of elements in the ARRAY statement. ARRAY ABC[5] a b c d e; : ABC is an array-name, 5 implies the number of variables in the array, and "a b c d e" are the fields that make up the array.

You can create variables in a DATA step in the following ways: by using an assignment statement. by reading data with the INPUT statement in a DATA step. by specifying a new variable in a FORMAT or INFORMAT statement. by specifying a new variable in a LENGTH statement. by specifying a new variable in an ATTRIB statement.

We can also create new variables in an ARRAY statement by omitting the array elements from the statement. When our ARRAY statement fails to reference existing variables, SAS automatically creates new variables for us and assigns default names to them.

To create an array, define the data type (like int ) and specify the name of the array followed by square brackets []. To insert values to it, use a comma-separated list, inside curly braces: int myNumbers[] = {25, 50, 75, 100}; We have now created a variable that holds an array of four integers.

An if-then statement can be used to create a new variable for a selected subset of the observations. For each observation in the data set, SAS evaluates the expression following the if. When the expression is true, the statement following then is executed.
