Even if your employer doesn't offer an HSA — or if you're self-employed — you may be able to open an HSA on your own, as long as you're also enrolled in an HDHP.

To be an eligible individual and qualify for an HSA, you must also meet the following requirements. You are not covered by any other non-HDHP health plan, such as a spouse's plan, that provides any benefits covered by your HDHP plan. You are not enrolled in Medicare. You do not receive health benefits under TRICARE.

If the on-site clinic or nurse practitioner provides medical care (beyond preventive care) for free or at below-market cost before an individual has met the applicable deductible for his or her HDHP, then the individual will not be eligible to establish and contribute to an HSA.
