Many people ask, "Can I sign up for Medicare and still work full time?" The answer is, yes you can. And you can have both employer health coverage and Medicare. Depending on your situation, one will act as your primary coverage and one as secondary.

The 2024 Medicare income limit is $103,000 for individuals and $206,000 for couples. Those numbers are based on your income on your 2022 tax return. If you earned more than the Medicare income limit, you'll pay more for Medicare Part B (medical coverage) and Part D (prescription coverage).

If you work for a company that has more than 20 employees, the company must offer the same health insurance coverage to those who are 65 and older as it does to younger employees. This means the company cannot force you to enroll in Medicare even when you are eligible or offer incentives for you to do so.

Many people choose to keep working past 65 and keep their coverage under their employer's group plan. But if you've been paying into Medicare via payroll deductions, you may as well enroll in Original Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) when you're first eligible, as you'll pay no premium.

You can have group health plan coverage or retiree coverage based on your employment or through a family member. After the coordination period ends, Medicare pays first and your group health plan (or retiree coverage) pays second.

During the first 9 months that you work in a rolling 5-year period, you continue to receive full benefits, including Medicare, if the waiting period has passed, regardless of how much you earn, as long as you report your work activity to Social Security and continue to have a disabling impairment.

If the employer has less than 20 employees, the group health plan pays first, and Medicare pays second if both of these conditions apply: The employer is part of a multi-employer or multiple employer group health plan. At least one of the other employers has 20 or more employees.

State and local government employees hired (or rehired) after March 31, 1986, are subject to mandatory Medicare coverage. Public employees covered for Social Security under a Section 218 Agreement are already covered for Medicare.
