The NRC Framework includes three dimensions that are combined to form each science standard. The three dimensions are the science and engineering practices (SEPs), the crosscutting concepts (CCCs) and the disciplinary core ideas (DCIs).

These standards reflect the importance of every student's engagement with natural scientific phenomenon at the nexus of three dimensions of learning: Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts.

Breadcrumb. This is what students' experiences in classrooms implementing the NGSS should reflect: developing and using elements of the three dimensions, together, purposefully (i.e., to explain phenomena or design solutions to problems).

With the adoption of new science learning standards in New York State -- the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), an adaptation of NGSS -- we are re-designing much of our curricular offerings.

Under the current regulations pertaining to diploma requirements, a course aligned to learning standards in the Earth and space sciences is considered to be a physical science course.

New York State High School Graduation Requirements The following units of credit are required for graduation in New York State: English - 4 credits. Mathematics - 3 credits. Science - 3 credits*

The New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards are based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council1 and the Next Generation Science Standards2 . The framework outlines three dimensions that are needed to provide students a high-quality science education.

The Next Generation Science Standards are based around three-dimensional learning. The NGSS is made up of three distinct but equally important components: Disciplinary Core Ideas, Cross Cutting Concepts, and Science & Engineering Practices.
