The District offers a 20% residence homestead exemption and an exemption on a portion of the appraised value of residence homesteads of individuals who are disabled or are sixty-five years of age or older as noted here. Homeowners must claim the exemptions with the Harris County Appraisal District (“HCAD”).

Applications for a homestead exemption can be obtained online at .hcad.org under the “Forms” tab. For more information or details on homestead exemption eligibility, contact the Harris County Appraisal District at 713-957-7800 or by emailing help@hcad.org.

It can take up to 90 days to process a homestead exemption application. A property owner can always check the status of their application using our online portal or the property search function on our website.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION Attach a copy of property owner's driver's license or state-issued personal identification certificate. The address listed on the driver's license or state-issued personal identification certificate must correspond to the property address for which the exemption is requested.

Homestead exemption applicants must submit a copy of Texas Driver License (Texas ID for non licensed drivers) Applicants must affirm no other Homestead is claimed in or outside of Texas. Documents MUST be in the applicant's name and reflect the homestead property address for which the exemption is sought.

To qualify for the general residence homestead exemption an individual must have an ownership interest in the property and use the property as the individual's principal residence. An applicant is required to state that he or she does not claim an exemption on another residence homestead in or outside of Texas.

Property tax relief for Harris County residents will show up in 2023 tax bills now in the mail. Among other changes, the recently passed Proposition 4 will raise the homestead exemption to school property taxes from $40,000 to $100,000. Homeowners over 65 will get a larger tax break.
