The revised Motivation Scale, the Student Opinion Scale (SOS) is comprised of 10 items using a five-point likert scale ranging from 1 “Strongly Disagree” to 5 “Strongly Agree.” Responses to items are summed to form three scores: Total Motivation; Importance, and Effort.

The MAS is a sixteen item questionnaire that assesses the functions or motivations of behavior problems. The sixteen items are organized into four categories of reinforcement (attention, tangible, escape, and sensory) described in the previous section.

The Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) is a rating scale that assesses functions of problem behavior in individuals with developmental disabilities through informant responses.

Recent evidence indicates that the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS), designed by Durand and Crimmins (1988) to measure influential maintaining variables of maladaptive behavior, is associated with inadequate interrater reliability.

The MAS consists of five subscales measuring sensory, escape demands, attention, attention, and tangible motivations. Each item is scored on a 0 to 6 scale, with higher scores indicating higher motivation levels. First developed by Drs. Durand and Crimmins, in 1988, the original MAS consisted of 16 questions.

MAS items describe specific situations, and the respondent rates how likely the target behavior is to occur on a 6-point Likert scale ranging from “0 = never” to “6 = always”. Item scores are summed within each subscale/function, and mean ratings are then calculated for the respective subscales.

The Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) was developed to provide clinical information on four hypothesized functions that may control problem behaviour in persons with developmental disabilities.
