Financial Documentation and the I-20 Process Rutgers will issue your I-20 once you accept our offer of admission. After your I-20 is issued, bring it to the American embassy or consulate when applying for a student visa. Please review the information below about required documentation for I-20 issuance.

Requesting a Travel Signature We recommend that you request a travel signature from the ISSO at least two weeks in advance of departing the U.S. For students, please contact your ISSO Student Advisor.

The F or M nonimmigrant must keep all copies of the Form I-20 received during a program of study. An F or M student does not need a Form DS-2019, “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status.” The Form DS-2019 allows a J exchange visitor to apply for a visa.

What is a Travel Signature? An endorsement that an F-1 student is eligible to re-enter the United States indicated by their International Student Advisor's signature on p. 2 of your most recently issued I-20 document.

Get a Travel Signature on Your I-20 To get a travel signature, make a request through Atlas at least two weeks before you plan to travel, and bring your I-20 to OIA. Travel signatures are valid for one calendar year or until the completion of your program, whichever comes first.

Federal regulations require that, upon admission to an SEVP-certified school, a DSO provide an accepted student with a Form I-20 containing the DSO's actual signature. Upon receipt, the student must also sign the Form I-20.

What is an I-20 or DS-2019? The I-20 is the document F-1 students need from The New School in order to apply for the F-1 student visa; the DS-2019 is the document J-1 students need in order to apply for the J-1 student visa.

If you did not receive a travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019 before traveling, please request Form I-515A at the immigration port of entry. It is most likely the Customs and Border Protection officer at the U.S. Port of Entry will issue you an I-515 form.
