The fiduciary of a domestic decedent's estate, trust, or bankruptcy estate files Form 1041 to report: The income, deductions, gains, losses, etc. of the estate or trust. The income that is either accumulated or held for future distribution or distributed currently to the beneficiaries.

Any income earned before the date of death is reported on the decedent's final tax return, a separate document filed by the estate executor. Assets passed straight to the beneficiary and not held by the estate or trust are not included on Form 1041. Form 1041 applies to federal taxation.

Use Form 1041-A to report the charitable information required by section 6034 and the related regulations. The trustee must file Form 1041-A for a trust that claims a charitable or other deduction under section 642(c) unless an exception applies.
