Affirmative action has been around since 1978 to increase racial diversity at colleges and universities, but California banned the practice at its public universities in 1996.

Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation The CSU protects people from discrimination based on age, disability, gender, genetic information, gender identity or expression, nationality, marital status, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and veteran or military status.

Racial inequity is baked into the higher education system, but the Supreme Court's decision to ban affirmative action means colleges can no longer consider race as one of many factors when evaluating a student's potential admission.
