Preservation Description Information (PDI) The information which is necessary for adequate preservation of the Content Information and which can be categorized as Provenance, Reference, Fixity, and Context information.
Without preservation metadata, digital material will be lost. “While a print book with a broken spine can be easily re-bound, a digital object that has become corrupted or obsolete is often impossible (or prohibitively expensive) to repair”.
One way of preserving metadata when moving files around is to first put them into a 'container' file (like a ZIP file). That way, the ZIP's metadata gets changed but its contents remain untouched.
Two examples of preservation specific metadata specifications are PREMIS and LMER. PremIS (Preservation metadata: Implementation Strategies) is one attempt at specifying the semantic units needed to support core preservation functions.
The term Open Archival Information System (or OAIS) refers to the ISO OAIS Reference Model for an OAIS. This reference model is defined by recommendation CCSDS 650.0-B-2 of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems; this text is identical to = 57284 ISO 14721:2012.
