How to fill out the IRS 8615 online

The IRS 8615 form is used to calculate the tax for certain children who have unearned income. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to filling out this form online, ensuring you understand each part and its purpose.

Follow the steps to fill out the IRS 8615 form with ease.

  1. Press the ‘Get Form’ button to acquire the IRS 8615 form and open it for editing.
  2. Begin by entering the child's name as shown on their return and their social security number in the designated fields.
  3. Next, provide the parent's name and social security number, ensuring accuracy to avoid issues with processing.
  4. Select the parent’s filing status by checking the appropriate box: single, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse.
  5. In Part I, enter the child’s unearned income in line 1. If the child did not itemize deductions on Schedule A, enter $2,500 in line 2.
  6. Calculate line 3 by subtracting line 2 from line 1. If the result is zero or less, stop here and attach this form to the child's return.
  7. On line 4, input the child's taxable income from Form 1040 or Form 1040-NR, line 15. If applicable, refer to the instructions for Filing Form 2555.
  8. Line 5 requires you to enter the lesser of line 3 or line 4. Again, if this value is zero, do not complete the form further; attach it to the child's return.
  9. Move to Part II, starting with line 6, where you will enter the parent’s taxable income from Form 1040 or Form 1040-NR, line 15.
  10. On line 7, indicate the total from Forms 8615, line 5 for all other children of the parent noted above, excluding the child referenced in line 5.
  11. Add lines 5, 6, and 7 for line 8 and refer to the provided instructions for the following calculations.
  12. If needed, calculate line 9 based on the tax rate relevant to the parent’s filing status indicated above.
  13. Line 10 will show the parent’s tax from Form 1040 or Form 1040-NR, line 16, excluding any alternative minimum tax. Follow guidance if Form 2555 is filed.
  14. In lines 11 and 12a, perform the necessary operations to arrive at the net calculations required for the child’s taxable effect.
  15. Finally, perform any warm-up checks as outlined in part III, calculate the child’s tax accordingly, and ensure all values are correctly derived.
  16. After completing the form, you can save changes, download, print, or share your filled IRS 8615 form as needed.

When you report your child's interest and dividend income on your return, file Form 8814 with your return. If your child files their own return and the kiddie tax applies, file Form 8615 with the child's return.

For 2023, Form 8615 needs to be filed if all of the following conditions apply: The child has more than $2,500 in unearned income. The child is required to file a tax return. The child does not file a joint tax return with a spouse.

Desktop: Form 8814 - Parents' Election to Report Child's Interest and Dividends. Parents may elect to include their child's income from interest, dividends, and capital gains with their tax return as long as the total taxable interest, dividends, and capital gains are less than $12,500.

If the child's unearned income is more than $2,500, use Form 8615 to figure the child's tax. Unearned income is generally all income other than salaries, wages, and other amounts received as pay for work actually performed (earned income).

Click on “Tax Tools” on the left menu bar. Select "Tools". Type in 8615 and you should see this topic now highlighted in the list, click the "Go" button to step through the interview process and review/edit your entries.

Question: Explain the two different ways that the tax on unearned income of minor children, or "kiddie tax," can be reported. The kiddie tax may be computed on Form 8615 which is attached to the child's tax return. Alternatively, the parents may elect to include the income by attaching Form 8814 .

The form is required when the child's unearned income exceeds certain limits set by the IRS. It calculates the child's tax liability, which may be different from the tax liability of the parent or guardian.

To claim a child's income on a parent's tax return, the child needs to be considered a qualifying child dependent of the parent. Parents can use IRS Form 8814 to elect to report their child's income on their tax return instead of the child filing their own return.
