CalPERS COLA 2024: Key Changes and Updates The average monthly retirement compensation for employees will increase from $1,848 in 2023 to $1,907 in 2024. The maximum wages subject to Social Security tax will rise to $168,000 from $160,000 in 2023.
The COLA for CalSTRS retirees is not compounding. It adds a fixed 2% of the member's original pension benefit each subsequent year.
If you work while receiving a CalSTRS retirement benefit, you're subject to fiscal year earnings limitations: July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024: $50,655. July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025: $74,733.
The normal cost is assessed each year based on the actuarial valuation, the snapshot of CalSTRS' financial status presented to the Teachers' Retirement Board each spring. Your contribution rate is 10.205% of your creditable earnings.
Legislation will provide additional increases to supplemental benefits for certain retirees beginning in 2023. Soaring prices for food, gas and other goods have almost everyone worried, especially those with fixed incomes. At CalSTRS, we offer two programs intended to ease the impact of inflation on our members.
Annual benefit adjustment Under California state law, you'll receive an automatic benefit increase equal to 2% of your initial benefit beginning September 1 after the first anniversary of your retirement.
You'll no longer be a CalSTRS member. You'll cancel your eligibility for your CalSTRS retirement benefit, as well as survivor and disability benefits, unless you return to CalSTRS-covered employment. Any option beneficiary or one-time death benefit designation will be canceled.
CalSTRS 2% at 62—Members who were first hired to perform service that could be credited to the Defined Benefit Program on or after January 1, 2013. You're eligible to receive a retirement benefit when you reach age 55 and have at least five years of service credit.
