The fiduciary of a domestic decedent's estate, trust, or bankruptcy estate files Form 1041 to report: The income, deductions, gains, losses, etc. of the estate or trust. The income that is either accumulated or held for future distribution or distributed currently to the beneficiaries.

Any income earned before the date of death is reported on the decedent's final tax return, a separate document filed by the estate executor. Assets passed straight to the beneficiary and not held by the estate or trust are not included on Form 1041. Form 1041 applies to federal taxation.

Use Form 1041-A to report the charitable information required by section 6034 and the related regulations. The trustee must file Form 1041-A for a trust that claims a charitable or other deduction under section 642(c) unless an exception applies.

Please mail the return to: Department of Revenue, P.O. Box 3815, Jefferson City, MO 65105-3815. Rounding is required on your tax return. Zeros have been placed in the cents columns on your return. For 1 cent through 49 cents, round down to the previous whole dollar amount.

You'll subtract deductions from income and then use Schedule G of Form 1041 to calculate the tax owed. You can then subtract any tax payments that have already been made or withheld, any penalty owed (if applicable) or the amount overpaid (if applicable).

In summary, Form 1040 declares income the person earned during the tax year while they were alive, and Form 1041 declares income earned by the estate or trust after the owner's death.
