While working at Acoustic Research in 1952, Kloss and engineer Edgar Villchur created the first acoustic suspension loudspeaker, the AR-1. This bookshelf-sized speaker could deliver deep bass sounds. It was the first speaker of its kind, and many say it changed the industry forever.

Alexander Graham Bell patented his first electric loudspeaker (a moving iron type capable of reproducing intelligible speech) as part of his telephone in 1876, which was followed in 1877 by an improved version from Ernst Siemens.

Acoustic Research Inc. was founded in 1952 by audio inventor Edgar Villchur and his student Henry Kloss. In 1956, the company patented an air suspension woofer to solve the problem of bass distortion.

AR-3 loudspeaker In 1958, AR once again pioneered loudspeaker technology with the introduction of the landmark model AR-3, which used the AR-1's acoustic-suspension woofer in conjunction with the first commercially available hemispherical (“dome”) mid-frequency midrange unit (squawker) and high-frequency tweeter.

The AR-3a is a three-way speaker and measures approximately 25” x 14” x 11½ ” inches and weigh about 46lbs each. It´s cabinet is made of real walnut veneer, grills are mostly cream colored. Each speaker has a 12 inch woofer, a dome midrange and a ¾ inch dome tweeter.

AR was established to produce the US$185 (equivalent to $1,990 in 2022) model AR-1, a loudspeaker design incorporating the acoustic suspension principle based on U.S. patent 2,775,309, granted to Edgar Villchur and assigned to Acoustic Research in 1956.

The first acoustic-suspension loudspeaker, the AR-1, was introduced at the New York Audio Show in 1954, and was an instant success. Villchur continued to improve loudspeakers, coming out with new models roughly every two years. The AR-2, produced in 1956, was a no-frills version of the speaker at a lower price.
