From the smallest forage fish like Pacific herring and sandlance to deepwater giants such as 500 pound Pacific halibut and 14-foot sleeper sharks, fish play critical roles in Glacier Bay's rich ecosystems.

The sharks are managed as two stock complexes: Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska. The species within the complexes are: Pacific sleeper shark, spiny dogfish, salmon shark and “other/unidentified” sharks.

HABITAT: Great white sharks can be found patrolling nearshore waters as they search for prey and they appear to be regular visitors to the waters of Southeast Alaska, off Yakutat, in Prince William Sound and they have been seen several times in Cook Inlet, along the Alaska Peninsula and in the Aleutian Islands.

The other salmon sharks tagged in Prince William Sound, all females, typically spend summer and early fall in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska, then over-winter off the coast of California, and come back to the Sound the following summer.”

There are three shark species commonly found in Alaskan waters: Pacific sleeper shark (Somniosus pacificus), spiny dogfish (Squalus suckleyi), and salmon shark (Lamna ditropis).

The salmon shark gets its name from one of its prey items, the Pacific salmon (Oncorhyncus spp.). Although it is considered to be one of the main predators of Pacific salmon, the salmon shark is actually an opportunistic feeder with a wide-ranging diet.

The salmon shark is the doppelganger of the porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus). They look almost identical, growing up to 12 feet long with a dark grayish back and a lighter underbelly. While the porbeagle hangs out in the north Atlantic, the salmon shark prefers the cool waters of the north Pacific.

From July to September in Prince William Sound (PWS), large salmon shark aggregations are most often observed associated with adult Pacific salmon concentrations in bays and passes. As one might expect, during summer salmon are the principal prey in salmon shark diet in Prince William Sound.
