Beginning in 1868, traders (mostly people of European descent) came to the area and established trading posts, which quickly became economic and cultural-exchange centers, where Navajos would trade sheep, wool, rugs, baskets, and jewelry for products such as canned goods, tobacco, coffee, flour, sugar, and tools.

Traditionally the Navajo walked and perhaps used dogs to draw a sled with their belongings. When horses were introduced to the area, the Navajo were one of the first Native American tribes to master riding them. Now, the Navajo get around like everyone else, by car, bus, or whatever transport is around.

The Navajo flourished and migrated via extended family units into northern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Around 1700, and possibly as early as 1620, the Navajo moved into the San Juan River area of Utah in search of pasture land for their sheep and goat herds.

Between 1863 and 1866, more than 10,000 Navajo (Diné) were forcibly removed to the Bosque Redondo Reservation at Fort Sumner, in current-day New Mexico. During the Long Walk, the U.S. military marched Navajo (Diné) men, women, and children between 250 to 450 miles, depending on the route they took.

The payments in 2022 for Navajo Nation members are as follows: Ages 0-17: $600. Ages 18-59: $2,000. Ages 60 and older: $2,300 (split into separate payments of $2,000 and $300. You have to establish you are a tribe member and you should have a card establishing that if you are Navajo.

The Navajo were highly adaptive and incorporated domestic livestock and agriculture into their subsistence system. They also adopted the horse and, like other tribes who used the animal as a means of transportation, sometimes engaged in slave and food raids on neighboring tribes.

The Navajo Nation requires at least one biological parent to be enrolled with the Navajo Nation, the applicant must meet the minimum 1/4 Navajo Blood requirement. Paternity has to be established on the applicant's birth certificate to be considered for the paternities blood quantum.

Administrative divisions The five agencies within the Navajo Nation are Chinle Agency in Chinle, Arizona; Eastern Navajo Agency in Crownpoint, New Mexico; Western Navajo Agency in Tuba City, Arizona; Fort Defiance Agency in Fort Defiance, Arizona; and Shiprock Agency in Shiprock, New Mexico.
