Most errors happen because the child you claim doesn't meet the qualification rules: Relationship: Your child must be related to you. Residency: Your child must live in the same home as you for more than half the tax year. Age: Your child's age and student or disability status will affect if they qualify.

How the child tax credit works. Currently, the child tax credit is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17 for 2023 and reduces your taxes on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

You must complete Form 8862 and attach it to your tax return to claim the EIC, CTC/RCTC/ACTC/ODC, or AOTC if both of the following apply. Your EIC, CTC/RCTC/ACTC/ODC, or AOTC was previously reduced or disallowed for any reason other than a math or clerical error.

You (and your spouse, if you're married) must have "earned income," meaning money earned from a job. Non-work income, such as investment profits, doesn't count. You must have paid for the care so that you could work or look for work.

If the IRS determined a taxpayer claimed the credit(s) due to reckless or intentional disregard of the rules (not due to math or clerical errors) the taxpayer can't claim the credit(s) for 2 tax years. If the error was due to fraud, then the taxpayer can't claim the credit(s) for 10 tax years.

California families qualify with earned income of $30,931 or less. You also must have a qualifying child under 6 years old at the end of the tax year and qualify for CalEITC – with one exception. For tax year 2022 forward, no earned income is required and you may have a net loss of as much as $33,497.

You can download Form 8862 from the IRS website and file it electronically or by mail. You won't be able to file this form or claim the credits for up to 10 years if your previous attempt to claim one of these credits was denied due to fraud or reckless disregard for the rules.
