An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a federal tax identification number, and is used to identify a business entity. It is also used by estates and trusts which have income which is required to be reported on Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts.

In order to have a California resale certificate, you must first apply for a California sales tax permit. This sales permit will provide you with a California Tax ID number (sales tax number) which will be a necessary field on the California resale certificate.

Your New Jersey Tax ID number will be the same as your EIN plus a 3-digit suffix and is used for state tax purposes.

Is a seller's permit/resale license and EIN/Tax ID the same? These are not the same thing. A seller's permit/resale license is the same as a state tax ID, as both are issued by the state for sales tax purposes. An EIN or federal tax ID number, however, is issued by the federal government, not the state.

If the supplier is registered with New Jersey for Sales Tax, the retailer may issue a fully completed New Jersey Resale Certificate (Form ST-3) or the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Certificate of Exemption (Form ST-SST) to the supplier rather than pay New Jersey Sales Tax on that purchase.

Your New Jersey tax identification (ID) number has 12 digits. If you have a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), your New Jersey tax ID number is your FEIN followed by a three-digit suffix. If you do not have a suffix, enter three zeroes.

When you buy items or services in New Jersey, you generally pay Sales Tax on each purchase. The seller (a store, service provider, restaurant, etc.) collects tax at the time of the sale and sends it to the State. The law exempts some sales and services from Sales Tax.
