Eligibility Requirements The PD/PI must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or valid U.S. visa holder. The PD/PI must be no more than 7 years beyond the date that the first professional, advanced professional, or terminal academic degree was awarded, whichever is most recent.

Institutional Clinical Scientist Awards(K12) support programs with a set number of positions or "slots" for fellows. The fellows spend 2 to 4 years conducting research with a qualified faculty mentor. The K01 award is available to individuals with research or health-professional doctoral degrees. K01 applicants applying to the NIMH may have no more than 6 years of postdoctoral research experience as of the relevant application due date at the time of the initial or resubmission application.

About the program. The purpose of the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and “protected time” (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence.

NIAID R25 programs support educational activities at grantee institutions with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development, Research Experiences, and Mentoring Activities related to NIAID's mission areas. If you are a clinicianand are doing basic research, you are eligible for a K08. If you are a clinician and you interact directly with patients for your research (not just to fulfill your commitment to your department), you are eligible for the K23 award. K99/R00 applicants must have no more than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application regardless of whether it is a new or resubmission application. Applicants must be in mentored, postdoctoral training positions to be eligible to apply to the K99/R00 program.
