Homelessness prevention programs are intended to prevent persons who are housed from becoming homeless by helping them regain stability in their current housing or permanent housing. Through our Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) we offer rental deposits and arrearages (Eviction Notices, outstanding payments etc.)

For people at risk of homelessness, CHPI provides emergency financial assistance in the form of rental and/or utility arrears to prevent people from losing their housing. The HFG and ISHP programs both provide affordable housing and related supports targeted to households at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

ESG program participant eligibility is assessed based on homelessness or at-risk of homelessness status, and in some cases, income eligibility. ESG recipients may have additional eligibility criteria as well.

The Canada Ontario Housing Benefit (COHB) program provides households with a portable housing benefit to assist with rental costs in the private housing market. The benefit is tied to the household and can be used to help pay rent anywhere in Ontario. The application process is not open to the public.

The HFG and ISHP programs both provide affordable housing and related supports targeted to households at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This includes funding for affordable rental units and rent supplements.

Proven housing-based policies include: Federal housing assistance: Federal housing programs are one of the most successful housing-based solutions to reduce homelessness. The two largest federal housing programs are public housing and federal housing vouchers, known as Housing Choice Vouchers or Section 8 vouchers.
